Niner Gold Rush - August 9th

Preseason game 1 preview, and happy Dwight Clark week 8/7!

Happy Friday, Niner Gang! It’s been a wild week as we ramp up for preseason game 1. Let’s take a look back at this past week:

Weekly Summary

  • The latest on Brandon Aiyuk is that Aiyuk, Shanahan and others in the organization had a sit-down meeting where “open and candid thoughts were expressed”, and there are renewed efforts towards putting together an extension for Aiyuk.

    • Why they couldn’t have had an open and candid discussion earlier…I don’t know…

  • In a surprising move to many, the 49ers cut tight end Logan Thomas, who they had signed just 2 months ago

  • Christian McCaffrey will be held out of camp for a couple weeks due to a calf strain, but says if the first preseason game were a regular season game then he would be playing

  • Two rumored trades for Brandon Aiyuk that the 49ers would supposedly have accepted, but Aiyuk refused to get traded to those teams:

    • 1) Browns: WR Amari Cooper, 2nd rd pick, & 5th rd pick

    • 2) Patriots: OLB Josh Uche, 2nd rd pick, & 5th rd pick

Preseason Game 1 - Saturday

I put very little stock in preseason games, but there are a few areas of interest for preseason game 1.
The rookies: Yes, all of the rookies of course, but specifically will be watching to see how Ricky Pearsall & Dominick Puni look.
Pearsall, as our first round pick, comes with high expectations. Did we draft the eventual replacement to either Deebo or Aiyuk, or did we draft another 1st round WR bust? (..see AJ Jenkins). Pearsall has drawn positives reviews out of training camp, but it’s time to see him with a 49ers uniform on!
His last name may be Puni, but we need our 3rd round Offensive Line pick Dominick Puni to play large for us. As we all know, the 49ers O-Line is a major cause for concern again this season. There’s real opportunity for Puni to come in and start from day 1, likely at Right Guard. Excited to see him play in preseason game 1!
